Green Dragon has emerged from hiding.

At 16:00 GMT Ian Walker’s men came clean having spent the last 12 hours in StealthPlay an innovation for the 2008-09 race which allows boats to conceal their position from the rest of the fleet on the longer offshore legs.

FLEET EDGES EVER CLOSER TO THE OFF

Twenty-one of the 2008 Rolex Middle Sea Race fleet took part in a 16-mile coastal race today, starting from Marsamxett Harbour and taking the yachts down to the south-east corner of Malta to Delimara Point before returning back home. The course was raced in light, unstable winds that kept the fleet on their toes throughout. The IRC optimized TP52 RAN (GBR) of Niklas Zennstrom led around the track finishing in a shade over three hours, beating the 100-foot Rapture (MAR) across the line by some thirty-five minutes.

French World’s number one to compete in Rolex Osprey Cup

The list of invited skippers for the 2008 Rolex Osprey Cup has been announced by organizers St. Petersburg Yacht Club (St. Petersburg, Fla.). Topping the list at the ISAF Grade 1 match racing regatta is Claire Leroy (Nantes, FRA), the world’s #1 ranked match racer and ISAF Rolex Sailor of the Year in 2007. Leroy will face a field of the world’s top women sailors dueling in a one-on-one format in Sonar class keelboats, from October 22-25 on Tampa Bay.

Yesterday Ian Walker, skipper on Green Dragon, spoke about the choices facing the teams, as they approached the Canary Islands. East of the islands offered better pressure, but a trickier exit, with an unfavourable shift forecast.

80 boats register for 40th anniversary race

The Rolex Middle Sea Race rarely does things in a small way - too much wind, not enough wind; not one, but two active volcanoes on the course; whirlpools and tidal gates; fast races, slow races. This is a course long on stories and adventures, short on the mundane and routine. This year looks to be no different. As of close of entries, eighty boats from twenty nations have registered. If all cross the start-line in Marsamxett Harbour on 18th October a new entry-record will have been set, eclipsing the previous best of sixty-eight in 2006.

Jonny Malbon playing catch up

With the days ticking away before the start of the Vendee Globe, Jonny is acutely aware of how little time he has had to prepare and get to know the new Rogers designed Artemis, but he is pushing hard and is objective in his expectations. Measurement problems meant a new rig had to be built in double quick time. Malbon and his new boat missed out on valuable racing in the key Artemis Transat in the early spring and only just managed to be ready to compete in the Artemis Challenge round the Isle of Wight race.

Telefonica Blue take the inside lane

The last report I checked last night was the 07:00 GMT. And when I stared (bleary eyed) at the Distance to Leader (DTL) on the 04:00 GMT this morning, I thought that the new data hadn’t loaded. But no, PUMA were now second and Telefonica Black were third, even if the gap to Ericsson 4 was still just six miles. And look! The gap back to Green Dragon in fifth had changed by a mile!
