The long-awaited start day of leg one of the 10th running of the Volvo Ocean race dawned grey and very windy in Alicante, just as the forecasters had predicted, but it did not dampen the spirits of the 88 sailors who have been anxious to get this 6,500 nautical mile to Cape Town underway.

Less than 24 hours to go until the start
T
he countdown clock to the start of the inaugural Portimão Global Ocean Race is in hours now, not days, and things along the dock in Portimão seem reasonably relaxed given the enormity of the task that lies ahead. Shore teams are running around picking up last minute supplies, stocking fresh goods that will last for a few days and ticking off important items like toilet paper and matches. The light will soon fade here and a few boats will burn the midnight oil, but by and large the fleet is ready to go.

n a stunning upset to the three leaders of the World Match Racing Tour, Mattias Rahm (SWE) and his Stena Bulk Sailing Team, Johnie Berntsson (SWE) and his Berntsson Sailing Team and young Adam Minoprio (NZL) and the Emirates Team New Zealand/BlackMatch Racing team have all advanced to the Semi-Final round of the King Edward VII Gold Cup presented by Argo Group. Ben Ainslie (GBR) and his Team Origin have also advanced, defeating Tour newcomer Keith Swinton (AUS) in today's first-to-three point Quarter Final round.
