eX40s Flying start

The eXtreme 40s brought their unique style of sailing to the Volvo Ocean Race today, as the first event of the eXtreme 40 Series \| Alicante Grand Prix got underway in the main basin, right next to the Volvo 70s preparing for the start of the round the world epic.

The Fifty Knot barrier and new world record falls

It was a massive Friday at the Lüderitz Speed Challenge, with a new world record, and the magic 50 knot barrier broken by Sebastien Cattelan of France with a blistering run of 50.26 knots (93kph). The new record, still subject to ratification by a sitting of the World Speed Sailing Records Council, has placed the small coastal town in the southern part of Namibia firmly on the map for the extreme sport of speed sailing, where sailing boats, windsurfers and kitesurfers use only the natural elements to power them to almost 100kph speeds.

TEAMORIGIN, the British America’s Cup Challenger founded by Sir Keith Mills, took second place on the podium at the 2008 iShares Cup. With the points level going into the final round of the five event Extreme 40 series in Amsterdam, the TEAMORIGIN crew, skippered by Rob Greenhalgh missed out on the top spot to America’s Cup holder Alinghi.

Named ISAF Sailing World Cup - Sail Melbourne Ambassador Known simply and affectionately as "the Medal Maker" among those in the sailing world, Australian Coach Victor KOVALENKO is about to realise yet another dream within in his sport. The Ukrainian born Australian citizen has managed to stack up Olympic medals for his adopted country since his arrival in 1994, leading Australian athletes to medals in every Games since, except Athens in 2004.

Bostik, the first unit of the Veolia Oceans® series for the SolOceans, left the Gulf of Saint Tropez yesterday afternoon towards Calvi and Ajaccio in Corsica. But the final destination of this new voyage for Charles Caudrelier (skipper) and Yann Clavier (boat captain) is the Island of Malta, right in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Swedish Linda Rahm won the Tróia Portugal Women's Cup,organized by Sun Sailing team and sponsored by Turismo de Portugal and Troiaresort, which ended today in Tróia. The crew won 13 matches and was defeated only twice in the three Round Robins.

Gold Cup groups annouced

The three groupings for Stage 1 of the 2008 King Edward VII Gold Cup presented by Argo Group were announced Friday. Mathieu Richard (FRA) standing first in the ISAF Match Racing rankings and third in the World Match Racing Tour tops Group 1. Ian Williams (GBR), second on the ISAF list and first on the Tour, heads up Group 2. Last week’s winner of the Troia Portugal Match Cup, Sebastian Col (FRA), ranked seventh by ISAF but holding second on the Tour, tops Group 3.

With only a matter of days until the start of the 29th Rolex Middle Sea Race, organisers the Royal Malta Yacht club are rubbing their hands together at the prospect of an entry exceeding seventy boats for the first time ever. Not only that, but the yachts are drawn from most corners of the sailing world with the fleet flying no less than eighteen different national flags. Entries close on 11th October and the race itself starts from Marsamxett Harbour on the 18th October - so there is still time to be part of an historic contest that marks the 40th anniversary of this 607 nautical mile adventure.
