Telefonica Blue take the inside lane
T
he last report I checked last night was the 07:00 GMT. And when I stared (bleary eyed) at the Distance to Leader (DTL) on the 04:00 GMT this morning, I thought that the new data hadn’t loaded. But no, PUMA were now second and Telefonica Black were third, even if the gap to Ericsson 4 was still just six miles. And look! The gap back to Green Dragon in fifth had changed by a mile!

ith the days ticking away before the start of the Vendee Globe, Jonny is acutely aware of how little time he has had to prepare and get to know the new Rogers designed Artemis, but he is pushing hard and is objective in his expectations. Measurement problems meant a new rig had to be built in double quick time. Malbon and his new boat missed out on valuable racing in the key Artemis Transat in the early spring and only just managed to be ready to compete in the Artemis Challenge round the Isle of Wight race.

Ericsson 4 hold their nerve
T
hey’ve busted down the gates and broken free, but not before a night of sweat, stress and toil was done. The fleet’s struggle through the Straits of Gibraltar has been as tough as anticipated, with some long, straight and wide passing lanes. So I was half right – Ericsson 4 got clear of the Straits of Gibraltar with a decent amount of her lead still intact, but her sistership didn’t.

Blue get back on track
B
ouwe Bekking’s men have completed repairs to their damaged steering system are back on the race track, where overnight, the fleet compressed heading into the Atlantic. The Telefonica Blue crew raised their mainsail at 06:17 GMT and the team proceeded to their last racing position where they resumed racing at 06:53 after serving their minimum 12 hour pit stop penalty.

Alfa Romeo is the Winner of Barcolana 40
E
ngaging and full of unexpected turns of events, despite the light wind. A definition that may seem a paradox for a race which instead suits Barcolana 40. Predictions held true, with Alfa Romeo first but the overall trend of the race was surprising. The first five, Alfa Romeo, MaxiJena, Shosholoza, Banco Espirito Santo and Artemis, did not make any tactical mistakes considering the great differences between the boats that clinched the first positions and the weather conditions forecast by meteorologists.
