Adler and de Almeida move into second place
By finishing the second race of the 2010 Star World Championship in fifth place, Brazilian sailors Alan Adler and Guilherme de Almeida have moved into second place of the event hosted at the Yacht Club of Rio de Janeiro (ICRJ).
The team has raked up a total of 11 lost points and is ranked only behind German sailors Johannes Babendererde and Timo Jacobs, who won the opening regatta on Saturday and finished eighth in Sunday’s race.
Different from the opening race, held inside of Guanabara Bay, the second race took place at a course between Pai e Mãe Island, near Niteroi, and Leme Point, consisting of 5 legs, with a total length of 10.5 nautical miles, or approximately 19.4 km. The third race will be held this Monday, also outside of Guanabara Bay.
Alan Adler, 1989 Star World Champion, celebrated his second place in the overall ranking. He believes that consistency is essential for winning the title. "We had a great start and dominated most of the race. We made a mistake in the last maneuver, when we lost two positions. But that is part of the game," he said.
Swiss sailors Flavio Marazzi and Enrico de Maria managed an incredible recovery in the tournament. They finished 30th in the race on Saturday and took first place this Sunday. "Each race in Rio is different. I know that tomorrow will be another challenge. This is only the second race and we have shown that we are still alive in the World Championship," said Marazzi, who, with fellow sailor De Maria, leads the Star ranking. "We still have four more regattas to go and the tournament is wide open."
After Alan Adler and Guilherme de Almeida, the next highest ranked Brazilians are Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada, who are in seventh place, with 22 points lost, followed by Gastão Brun and Gustavo Kunze, in 11th place, with 28 points. Torben Grael and Marcelo Ferreira are in 13th place, with 30 points; André Mirsky and Marcelo Jordão, in 16th with 39 points and finally in 22nd place, Lars Grael and Ronald Seifert, with 50 points.
