For glamour and glitz Cartagena may pale slightly by comparison with Puerto Portals where the last Audi MedCup Regatta was, but the welcome and the level of interest in the TP52 fleet here in this historic City has been warm and constant. Yesterday evening the port was positively buzzing as visitors and locals lined the dockside to see the boats and take in the atmosphere and learn more about the Audi MedCup Circuit.
After a difficult, challenging opening day Bribón leads the Region of Murcia Trophy by just two points from Quantum Racing (USA).
The Botin & Carkeek designed series leaders made are error at the windward mark in the first race which cost them, while Bribón were best on the first downwind, making consistent gains to win, but as Quantum Racing’s Ed Reynolds (USA), project manager, cautions this morning ‘ this is the kind of place you could lose a lot of points very quickly….’
While Quantum are still well ahead on the Audi MedCup Circuit, the battle for second to fifth places is still very close, and a couple of bad races in these stronger winds and bigger seas, or worse still blowing out a ky spinnnaker, could be conclusive.
Artemis have only 9.8 points on Bribón, but the gap back to fourth placed Matador is 32.8 points and they, in turn are only nine points ahead of Platoon powered by Team Germany.
Predictions for weather today expect winds of between 14 and 22 knots, much the same as yesterday, unless the ceiling of cloud cover opens up in which case we might see more 22-24 knots, with thre breeze movign right from 40-45 degrees earyl on t about 60 degrees. The race course area can be moved a little closer to the shore, since a large moored gas tanker limited the inshore area yesterday.
